RE: We did it

Congrats!
They say the first 27 years are the hardest.
My British Bride and I have been happily married for 18 years. Been married for 30, but happily...
...there was the five year stretch in the early '80s, then a few of years in the '9os...

RE: Traveling from Texas to Omaha through Kansas

I always stay on US-75 all the way to Omaha. As has been said, the Bellevue bridge is narrow, and IIRC, there is a sign warning that vehicles over a certain width are prohibited.
The Sac-and-Fox truck stop has the best fuel prices that I've found anywhere on this trip. The Casino is right next to it and has a great buffet, although I have not stayed there.
Cost on the turnpike from the Oklahoma border to Topeka for my Class A with a toad was $14.

RE: So tell me, how much more can

Just about when I'm about to give up on the young'uns, something like this happen. This was in Duncan, Oklahoma.
***
Last night my wife and I enjoyed dinner at Golden Corral with our WWII
veteran friend Hap LaParche. Also in attendance were the 5th grade
students from one of the local elementary schools. Their mission was
to greet every one of the veterans as they arrived and departed, and
also to roam the dining room. They were thanking every one of us for
our service to our country. I was happy to see that somewhere,
someone is trying to let these kids know what we're about. I felt
that most of these kids were there because they wanted to be, not
because someone else pushed them into it.

RE: Woman loses 400K to Nigerian Email Scam

The first hook is greed. People buy in wanting something for nothing. After they've been strung along for a while, they are enticed to do something illegal to continue on the path to untold riches. Once they do something illegal, this hook is well set.
This is not an isolated incident. Hard to believe, but millions are lost to these scammers. An old Air Force friend, now a recently retired FBI agent, provided some statistics a while back, but I don't have the specifics at hand.

Ode to Benji

ODE TO BENJI
He ain’t nuthin’ but a stupid ol’ dog, Benji is
Brought him from England with me.
Wife said if Benji don’t go, she don’t neither.
So paid 300 bucks as excess baggage for him to fly with me.
Tried to tell the wife he could swim, but she wouldn’t buy that.
Me and Benji flew from London into Dallas, rented a car in Dallas
and drove to Omaha.
Benji’s blind in one now, got cataracts in the other. Bumps into
things a lot.
He never was worth much.
Probably couldn’t catch a rabbit if he was starvin’.
He used to escape a lot in England, jump a six-foot fence like
it wasn’t even there.
All the neighbourhood kids knew to round him up
when they saw him out.
He can’t even get up the two steps from the back yard now.
Have to carry him.
He put a hole in my sister-in-law’s screen door in Dallas.
Benji don’t know he’s a dog – thinks he’s a people.
We put him in the back yard, but he thought he oughta be in the house.
So, he went right through that screen door.
Stupid ol’ dog.
Almost lost him last year.
He got into a dog fight, got tore up pretty bad.
Guess he’s like a lotta folks – don’t know when it ain’t worth it anymore.
Hauled him off to the vet, got him patched up.
Almost lost that stupid ol’ dog.
Didn’t know when I got married that a step-dog was part of the deal.
Benji got a little heat stroke last summer.
Thought he was a goner for sure.
Hauled him off to the vet again, she patched him up.
He has a little problem with his equilibrium now.
Can’t get around too good.
He can’t get on the couch anymore, too old.
Never did like him on the couch anyway.
Benji escaped once in Nebraska, got captured and
taken to doggie jail.
Had to bail him out.
Cost more ‘n he’s worth.
Shoulda left him there, but wife said no.
She wanted to trade me for him.
She’s had that dog from a pup.
Had him longer ‘n me, ‘bout 15 years.
Makes him around 100 years old now.
Wife called me at work, in a panic.
Can’t find Benji.
I came home, found him in the river, stuck in mud.
Afraid he was gonna drown, jumped in clothes and all.
Ruined a leather jacket.
Stupid ol’ dog.
Have to let Benji out the front door now,
He can’t manage the two steps in back.
Used to jump a six foot fence.
He don’t do much anymore, just lays around.
Sure is getting’ fat.
Weighs about 60 pounds.
Have to carry him upstairs every night,
he can’t make it on his own
Used to jump a six foot fence.
Wife says she’s gonna have to move to a downstairs bedroom.
Benji’s getting’ too heavy for her to carry.
Always knew that step-dog would come between us somehow.
Benji cornered the meterman once.
Wife was in the back yard and the meterman started to climb over
the fence to read the electricity meter.
Well, ol’ Benji changed the meterman’s mind real quick.
Wife always wondered if Benji would protect her.
Found out that day.
Benji’s got heart trouble now, and gets a lotta fluid on his lungs.
Has a lotta trouble breathin’ right.
We poke him full of pills every day.
Spend more on pills for him than on us.
He don’t do nuthin’ but eat and get fat anymore.
Probably won’t be with us much longer.
‘Bout ready to go to doggie heaven.
He don’t do much anymore.
Stupid ol’ dog.
Note: Benji died shortly after this was written. He is buried in the woods down by the river.

RE: traveling hwy 81 in nebraska from I80 south

US-81 turns into I-135 in Salinas, then I-35 in Wichita. Good road, been on it many times. I-35 from Wichita to the Oklahoma border is a toll road.
An alternate route would be US-75 south to Topeka, pick up the Kansas Turnpike (I-35) there and follow it on into Oklahoma. Downside is the toll all the way from Topeka to the Oklahoma border.
Been both ways, distance is not much, depends on from where you start out in Omaha. I'm usually going to or coming from Bellevue, so US-75 is the better option for me.

While you're there, you might consider a day trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Take the ferry from Port Angeles in the morning, take it back in the evening. Lots to see in Victoria within walking distance from the dock area.

RE: VA health care vs Medicare

Prior approval from the VA before treatment of an emergency is not required. I get almost all of my medical services from the VA, and dental service from Indian Health Services. After an incident with a table saw, I had emergency treatment at our local civilian hospital. The hospital then billed VA and VA paid with no questions asked.
GM
Funny...when you call the VA advice nurse (24 hour recording) it even says that the VA may not cover non pre approved treatements that result fro calling 911 or going to a non va emergency room. I myself personally had to cover a med bill that came from a emergency that in itself resulted from a VA surgery I had. I've experienced it, I'm told it on regular basis when i call to check on appointments yetyour going to sit here and tell me I'm wrong. Guess you know it all.
I am speaking from my experience. Others may have had different experiences.

RE: VA health care vs Medicare

If you are retired military, at age 65, Tricare-For-Life will kick in, but you must have Medicare Part B for that to happen. I really didn't need it, but took it anyway. With that coverage, all my hospital and doctor bills are paid. I don't even have a co-pay for doctor visites. Medicare will be the primary with Tricare as the backup. Tricare will pay what Medicare does not cover. This is important to me, since we travel a lot and a VA facility may not be close.
When you reach 65, you must get a new Military ID card.
It took a long hard fight and a lot of legislation to get this coverage for military retirees - something we were promised years ago. It is not a big deal if you are covered by VA, especially with a service-connected disability, but is a very big deal for those who are not.

Ford the record, I have eaten at Golden Corrals in Bellevue, Nebraska; Memphis, Tennessee; Twin Falls, Idaho; Dallas, Texas; Amarillo, Texas, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five different locations in Oklahoma and possibly a few I've forgotten.
Only had a bad meal in one of them.

RE: "Advise" versus "Advice" Just Another Rant

Language is but one media by which we communicate thoughts and ideas. Some gifted communicators cannot spell; some gifted spellers cannot communicate.
If I were to post something like, "My advise to you is to hurry home because your house is on fire!", there are those who would point out the correct use of "advise/advice" while their house burned down. Others perhaps not so gifted in syntax and spelling would hurry home, put out the fire and perhaps say, simply, "Thanks!"
